Is West Bengal Set To Implement The National Health Mission?
West Bengal is set to implement the National Health Mission (NHM), with the Centre sanctioning ₹2,103 crore to support the rollout, according to state officials.
Speaking at a health department event in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the state has already received ₹527 crore from the approved allocation.
The funds are expected to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, improve service delivery, and support various public health initiatives across the state.
How Much Funding Has The Centre Approved?
According to the Chief Minister, the Union government has approved a total allocation of ₹2,103 crore under the National Health Mission for West Bengal.
Of this amount, ₹527 crore has already been disbursed.
The funding is expected to be used for healthcare infrastructure upgrades, medical services, disease control programmes, and improving access to healthcare facilities in both urban and rural areas.
How Many Families Will Benefit From Ayushman Bharat?
Adhikari also announced that more than 13.6 million families in West Bengal will be covered under the Ayushman Bharat programme.
The scheme provides eligible beneficiaries with health insurance coverage for secondary and tertiary healthcare treatment, helping reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses.
According to the state government, the expanded coverage will significantly improve access to quality healthcare services for millions of residents.
What Changes Are Planned For Healthcare Monitoring?
To strengthen healthcare administration, the state government is setting up dedicated control rooms to monitor district hospitals across West Bengal.
Officials say the initiative will help improve oversight, track hospital performance, and enable quicker responses to operational issues.
The move is also expected to enhance coordination between healthcare facilities and state authorities.
Why Is The NHM Rollout Significant?
The National Health Mission is one of India’s largest public healthcare programmes, focusing on improving healthcare access, maternal and child health services, disease prevention, and strengthening health infrastructure.
Healthcare experts believe that implementation of NHM alongside Ayushman Bharat could improve healthcare outcomes and expand coverage across West Bengal, particularly in underserved regions.
With fresh central funding and expanded insurance coverage, the state aims to improve healthcare delivery while increasing access to affordable medical treatment.
