Why Has Glenmark Launched Lacosamide Injection In The US?

Indian pharmaceutical major Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has expanded its presence in the US generics market with the launch of Lacosamide Injection USP, a generic version of UCB’s epilepsy treatment Vimpat Injection.

The launch has been carried out through the company’s US subsidiary and marks another step in Glenmark’s strategy to strengthen its portfolio of differentiated and specialty generic products in one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical markets.

The product is being introduced in a 200 mg/20 mL single-dose vial format and is intended for the treatment of epilepsy. According to the company, the newly launched drug is bioequivalent and therapeutically equivalent to the reference-listed drug, Vimpat Injection.

The launch further reinforces Glenmark’s efforts to build a stronger foothold in the injectable medicines segment, which continues to offer attractive growth opportunities for generic drug manufacturers.

How Large Is The Market For Lacosamide Injection In The US?

The market opportunity for the product appears significant.

According to IQVIA data cited by Glenmark, Vimpat Injection recorded annual sales of approximately $15.2 million in the United States during the 12 months ended April 2026.

By launching a generic alternative, Glenmark aims to tap into this established market while offering a potentially more affordable treatment option for patients and healthcare providers.

Generic launches typically gain traction by providing cost-effective alternatives to branded medicines, allowing healthcare systems to reduce treatment expenses while maintaining therapeutic effectiveness.

Industry analysts expect continued demand for epilepsy treatments as neurological disorders remain a key area of pharmaceutical spending globally.

What Did Glenmark Say About The Launch?

Commenting on the development, Marc Kikuchi, President and Business Head for North America, said the launch reflects the company’s long-term strategy of expanding its differentiated pharmaceutical portfolio in the United States.

According to Kikuchi, Glenmark is focused on disciplined execution and strengthening its position in specialized product categories, including injectables.

The company believes that introducing generic Lacosamide Injection will improve access to affordable treatment options while addressing the needs of hospitals, healthcare providers, and patients in the US market.

The launch also aligns with Glenmark’s broader objective of expanding its presence in higher-value pharmaceutical segments beyond conventional oral generics.

How Does This Fit Into Glenmark’s Broader Lacosamide Strategy?

The latest launch is not Glenmark’s first entry into the Lacosamide market.

The company has steadily expanded its Lacosamide portfolio over the past few years. In 2022, Glenmark received approval for generic Lacosamide tablets in the United States. It further strengthened its presence in the category by launching a Lacosamide oral solution in 2024.

With the addition of Lacosamide Injection USP, Glenmark now offers multiple formulations of the epilepsy treatment, enabling it to serve a broader range of patient and healthcare requirements.

The strategy demonstrates the company’s focus on maximizing opportunities within therapeutic categories where it already has regulatory approvals and market presence.

Why Is Glenmark Focusing On Injectable Medicines?

Injectable drugs have emerged as an important growth segment within the pharmaceutical industry due to their complexity, higher entry barriers, and stronger pricing potential compared to traditional oral medications.

Recognizing this opportunity, Glenmark has accelerated its injectable product launches in the United States over the past year.

The company recently introduced products including Vancomycin Hydrochloride Injection, Sodium Phosphates Injection, and Potassium Phosphates Injection.

These launches are part of a broader effort to diversify revenue streams and strengthen its competitive position in specialized pharmaceutical segments.

What Does This Mean For Glenmark’s US Business?

The US remains one of Glenmark’s most important international markets.

With operations spanning more than 80 countries and 11 manufacturing facilities worldwide, the Mumbai headquartered pharmaceutical company continues to focus on expanding its portfolio in regulated markets.

The launch of Lacosamide Injection adds another product to its growing US pipeline and could contribute incremental revenue while enhancing the company’s standing in the injectable medicines market.

As healthcare systems increasingly seek affordable alternatives to branded therapies, Glenmark’s continued expansion in generic injectables positions it to benefit from rising demand across multiple therapeutic categories.
