India’s First Consumer Drone Company Is Now Building Advanced Defence-Grade UAV Systems
A proud moment for India’s drone and defence technology ecosystem, Bhopal-based startup IZI has advanced VANA, a fully indigenous multi-role UAV platform designed and developed entirely by its in-house engineering team. The achievement highlights the growing capability of Indian startups to build sophisticated aerial systems for strategic, industrial, and defence applications while reducing dependence on imported technologies.
The development represents a proud moment for India’s drone industry as IZI, recognised as the country’s first consumer drone company, continues its evolution from consumer technology into advanced enterprise and defence aviation systems.
Today, IZI stands as the only Indian drone company operating across both consumer technology and enterprise defence segments, positioning itself uniquely within the country’s rapidly expanding UAV ecosystem.
One Drone Platform, More Than 40 Mission Profiles
At the heart of VANA is a simple but powerful idea: operators should not require different drones for different missions.
Unlike conventional UAV programs that rely on multiple airframes, VANA has been built around a single core platform architecture capable of supporting more than 40 defence and industrial use cases through modular reconfiguration.
The same drone body can be transformed into a surveillance platform, reconnaissance asset, mapping system, inspection drone, tactical support vehicle, payload carrier, loitering platform, counter-UAS solution, acoustic-sensitive reconnaissance system, or swarm-enabled mission asset through interchangeable payloads and mission-specific configurations.
This approach significantly reduces operational complexity while improving scalability, training efficiency, maintenance standardisation, and deployment readiness.

Built In India, Engineered For Modern Operations
VANA has been completely designed, engineered, and developed in India by the IZI R&D team.
The platform integrates several advanced capabilities increasingly demanded by modern defence and strategic operators, including coordinated swarm operations, GPS-denied navigation, encrypted communications, electronic warfare resilience, autonomous mission execution, and adaptive tactical response systems.
The company has also engineered VANA with a reduced acoustic signature, allowing quieter operations in sensitive surveillance and reconnaissance environments where low detectability is critical.
During operational evaluations, the platform demonstrated endurance exceeding 100 minutes, placing it among India’s emerging long-endurance UAV platforms.

Indigenous Swarm Technology And Tactical Intelligence
IZI confirmed that VANA supports coordinated multi-drone operations through its proprietary mesh-network communication architecture.
The system enables synchronized deployment of multiple UAVs operating under both master-slave and independent mission logic, with architecture designed to scale into larger drone formations.
This capability is becoming increasingly important as defence forces globally move toward autonomous, networked, and collaborative aerial systems capable of operating in contested environments.
The platform’s GPS-denied operational capability further allows continuity of missions even in electronically challenged environments where traditional navigation systems may become unreliable.
Strengthening India’s Defence Manufacturing Vision
The announcement comes shortly after IZI unveiled a ₹50 crore manufacturing expansion in Madhya Pradesh, significantly increasing its domestic production capabilities across consumer, industrial, enterprise, and defence UAV systems.
The facility is expected to support India’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by strengthening indigenous drone manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported aerial technologies.
According to industry observers, the future of military and strategic drone systems lies in platforms that combine endurance, autonomy, swarm intelligence, low observability, electronic resilience, and mission adaptability within a single architecture.

Showcasing Indian Engineering To The World
Founded more than nine years ago, IZI has retailed over 10,000 drones across India and established itself as one of the country’s leading drone technology companies.
With VANA, the company is demonstrating that Indian-built aerial systems can compete globally not only in surveillance applications but as complete operational ecosystems engineered for precision, persistence, situational awareness, and mission adaptability.
As India accelerates investments in indigenous defence technologies, VANA represents an example of how homegrown innovation can contribute to the country’s strategic capabilities while showcasing the strength of Indian engineering on the global stage.
