The technical evaluation was conducted in consultation with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), according to a report by The Economic Times.

The development provides a significant boost to Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio’s plans to build a large-scale, home-grown satellite communication network capable of delivering high-speed internet and mobile connectivity across India.

Following the technical clearance, Jio can move forward with crucial international processes, including filings for orbital slots and coordination required to secure spectrum and orbital resources for its proposed constellation.

What Is Reliance Jio Planning With Its LEO Satellite Network?

Reliance Jio plans to deploy approximately 1,600 satellites in low-Earth orbit to establish a space-based communication network.

Unlike traditional geostationary satellites positioned much farther from Earth, LEO satellites operate at relatively lower altitudes. This can help reduce latency and enable faster connectivity, making such networks suitable for broadband internet, enterprise communications, mobile backhaul, and direct-to-device services.

According to the proposal, Jio’s constellation is designed to provide a total network capacity of approximately 4.5 to 5 terabits per second (Tbps).

The company also plans to establish around 20 to 22 ground stations across India to support the satellite constellation and manage connectivity services.

According to the report, Starlink has approval for around 600 gigabits per second (Gbps) of capacity over India, while Amazon’s Project Kuiper plans to offer approximately 3 Tbps. However, Project Kuiper is reportedly yet to receive authorisation from IN-SPACe.

In comparison, Jio’s proposed network capacity of 4.5 to 5 Tbps could potentially support a significant number of users and multiple connectivity services simultaneously.

However, actual commercial performance will depend on factors including satellite deployment timelines, spectrum availability, ground infrastructure, regulatory approvals, and user adoption.
