What Happened At The Vizag Steel Plant?
The Centre has announced a comprehensive relief package for the families of workers killed in the tragic accident at Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), popularly known as the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
The announcement came after a devastating explosion at the plant’s Steel Melt Shop-1 on Monday evening claimed eight lives and left six workers injured. The incident occurred during casting operations involving molten steel and triggered a massive fire within the facility.
The accident has once again highlighted the importance of industrial safety in heavy manufacturing units, prompting immediate intervention from both the central government and plant authorities.
Investigations into the exact cause of the explosion are currently underway.
What Relief Has The Centre Announced For Victims’ Families?
Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy announced a compensation package aimed at providing financial and social support to the families affected by the tragedy.
The Centre will provide an ex gratia payment of ₹25 lakh to the family of each deceased worker, irrespective of whether the individual was a permanent employee or an outsourced worker.
In addition, one member from every affected family will be offered permanent employment, ensuring long-term financial stability for dependents.
The government has also committed to providing free education for the children of the deceased workers, helping families cope with the long-term impact of the loss.
The relief package will be over and above all statutory benefits, including insurance claims, provident fund settlements, gratuity payments, and other employee entitlements.
What Support Will Injured Workers Receive?
The Centre has also announced assistance for workers injured in the explosion.
According to Kumaraswamy, all medical expenses of the injured employees will be fully borne by RINL.
Workers who suffered severe injuries will receive compensation of ₹10 lakh in addition to medical treatment and rehabilitation support.
The move is intended to ensure that affected employees and their families do not face additional financial burdens during recovery.
What Additional Benefits Have Been Offered?
The government has extended several welfare measures to support the families beyond immediate financial assistance.
Families residing in steel plant quarters will be allowed to continue occupying the accommodation until the notional retirement date of the deceased employee.
For families living outside the township, residential quarters will be offered based on eligibility if they wish to relocate.
Children of the deceased workers will continue to receive educational facilities available to RINL employees, ensuring minimal disruption to their studies.
These measures are designed to provide long-term stability and continuity for families dealing with the sudden loss of their primary earners.
What Role Has The Prime Minister Played?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the accident and announced assistance through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
The next of kin of each deceased worker will receive ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF, while injured workers will receive ₹50,000 as immediate relief.
The announcement adds to the broader compensation package unveiled by the Steel Ministry.
What Happens Next?
To determine the cause of the accident, the government has constituted a special inquiry committee comprising experts from other steel plants across the country.
The committee is expected to visit the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, inspect the accident site, and submit a detailed report identifying the reasons behind the explosion and recommending measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
During his visit to the site, Kumaraswamy assured employees that the Centre remains committed to the revival, safety, and long-term development of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
The tragedy has prompted renewed discussions around industrial safety standards in India’s steel sector, with authorities expected to closely review operational protocols once the inquiry report is submitted.
