The Central government on Saturday appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi upon his retirement.

The appointment marks the culmination of nearly four decades of distinguished military service for Lt Gen Seth, who currently serves as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and has held several key operational, command, and staff roles across the Indian Army.

With extensive experience in leadership positions and strategic military operations, Lt Gen Seth will take charge at a time when the Indian Army continues to focus on modernization, border preparedness, and strengthening indigenous defence capabilities.

Key Leadership Positions

Before being appointed Army Chief, Lt Gen Seth served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff from April 1, 2026.

The position is one of the most senior appointments within the Indian Army and involves overseeing operational preparedness, modernization initiatives, force restructuring, and administrative functions.

Prior to becoming Vice Chief, he served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the South Western Command and later the Southern Command, two of the Army’s most significant operational commands.

His tenure in these roles provided him with valuable experience in handling large-scale military formations and coordinating strategic operations across multiple regions.

Taking Charge During A Transformational Phase

Lt Gen Seth’s appointment comes as the Indian Army continues to undertake major modernization initiatives aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and technological capabilities.

The force has been focusing on integrating advanced technologies, strengthening indigenous defence production, and improving combat readiness across multiple theatres.

The Army is also working closely with the government and defence industry to accelerate the adoption of next-generation platforms, surveillance systems, and battlefield technologies.

As the new Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth is expected to play a critical role in driving these reforms while ensuring the Army remains prepared to address evolving security challenges.

Leadership Transition

General Upendra Dwivedi, whom Lt Gen Seth will succeed, has overseen several important initiatives related to operational preparedness, force modernization, and defence reforms during his tenure as Army Chief.

The transition is expected to be smooth, given Lt Gen Seth’s current role as Vice Chief and his familiarity with the Army’s ongoing strategic priorities.

Defence experts believe his extensive command experience and deep understanding of operational requirements position him well to lead the force through its next phase of transformation.

Looking Ahead

As India’s new Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth will be responsible for leading one of the world’s largest standing armies.

His leadership will be closely watched as the Army continues efforts to strengthen national security, enhance jointness among the armed forces, and advance military modernization programmes.

With decades of operational experience and a strong record of leadership, Lt Gen Seth is set to take charge at a pivotal moment for India’s defence establishment.
