How Did Revanth Reddy Rise to Lead Telangana?

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has completed 20 years as an elected public representative, marking a significant milestone in his political career. From winning his first election as an Independent candidate in 2006 to becoming the Chief Minister of Telangana in 2023, Reddy’s two decade journey reflects a steady rise through grassroots politics, legislative leadership, and state-level governance.

The milestone comes as the Congress leader continues to lead Telangana after guiding the party to a decisive victory in the 2023 Assembly elections, ending nearly a decade of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) rule.

How Did Revanth Reddy Begin His Political Career?

Revanth Reddy’s electoral journey began on July 4, 2006, when he was elected as a Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) member from Midjil in Mahabubnagar district. Despite having roots in student politics through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), he contested and won the election as an Independent candidate.

A year later, he secured another victory by becoming a member of the Legislative Council, once again as an Independent. Soon afterwards, he joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), where he emerged as one of the party’s prominent leaders in Telangana under the leadership of N. Chandrababu Naidu.

How Did He Become Telangana’s Chief Minister?

Revanth Reddy strengthened his political profile after winning the Kodangal Assembly constituency in both the 2009 and 2014 elections. Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, he served as the Working President of the TDP’s Telangana unit.

As the TDP’s influence declined in Telangana, he joined the Congress in 2017. His aggressive campaign against the then-ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) quickly established him as one of the Congress party’s leading faces in the state.

Although he lost the Kodangal seat in the 2018 Assembly elections the only electoral defeat of his career he staged a strong comeback by winning the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency in 2019.

His leadership abilities were recognised in 2021, when the All India Congress Committee (AICC) appointed him as the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President. Under his leadership, Congress returned to power in the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, following which he was sworn in as the state’s second Chief Minister on December 7, 2023.

What Did Revanth Reddy Say on Completing 20 Years?

Marking the occasion, Revanth Reddy thanked his supporters, party workers, and well-wishers who had stood by him throughout his political journey.

In a message shared on X, he expressed gratitude for their continued support and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Telangana. He said he would continue striving to fulfil public aspirations and earn a lasting place in the hearts of citizens through his work.

Several leaders, including State Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha, congratulated the Chief Minister on completing two decades as a public representative.

What Does This Milestone Signify for Telangana Politics?

Revanth Reddy’s 20-year political journey highlights one of the fastest leadership transitions in Telangana politics—from a grassroots local representative to the state’s highest elected office. His career has been marked by multiple political shifts, electoral victories, and organisational responsibilities across different phases of Telangana’s political evolution.

As Chief Minister, he now faces the challenge of translating electoral success into governance while delivering on development, infrastructure, employment, welfare, and investment commitments. Completing two decades in public life also underscores his growing influence in Telangana politics as the Congress looks to strengthen its position in the state over the coming years.
