Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history.

Cabinet members also gave Modi a standing ovation, recognising the landmark achievement that places him ahead of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in terms of uninterrupted tenure as an elected leader.

The milestone marks a significant moment in India’s political history, reflecting Modi’s continued electoral success across three consecutive general elections.

A Decade Of Continuous Leadership

Narendra Modi first assumed office as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, following a decisive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha elections.

His leadership received an even larger mandate in the 2019 General Elections, leading to the start of his second term on May 30, 2019. In 2024, Modi secured a third consecutive term, taking oath as Prime Minister on June 9, 2024.

With no interruption in his tenure since 2014, Modi has now surpassed the record previously held by Jawaharlal Nehru as the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister of India.
